As a result of the far-reaching plans, scientific proposals and continuous research initiatives of the Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics of Bangladesh Agricultural University, a newly built state-of-the-art and specialized "In Vitro Culture and Genome Editing Lab" for modern and up-to-date education and research in genetics was officially inaugurated today.
With the overall cooperation of the university administration and the support of KGF, BAS-USDA and ATF-HEAT projects, the infrastructure and necessary facilities of the lab have been developed following international standards and biosafety principles. This is the first such specialized clean lab in Bangladesh with modern in vitro embryo production, embryo culture and genome editing facilities, ensuring bio-safety, which will open a new horizon in livestock and biotechnology research in the country. In this lab, research activities will be carried out to produce cattle embryos by artificial means, monitoring the growth and development of embryos, and producing animals and birds with specific and desirable characteristics through the application of modern genome editing technology, while maintaining the highest standards of biosafety. This will create opportunities to develop effective scientific solutions for increasing milk and meat production, improving disease resistance, improving adaptation to the environment and developing future demand-driven livestock.
In addition, this clean lab will become a center for international quality genetic engineering, genomic analysis and modern biotechnology research. Undergraduate and postgraduate students, PhD researchers and young scientists of the university will get the opportunity to learn and research hands-on in various cutting-edge techniques including genomic data analysis, genetic engineering, animal tissue, embryo and cell culture, cell and embryo manipulation. This will create a strong platform to connect with domestic human resource development and international level research.
Vice-Chancellor of the university Prof. Dr. A K Fazlul Huque Bhuiyan said the lab will play a leading role as an important research infrastructure in making modern biotechnology-based education and research more dynamic and effective. He hoped that the knowledge and technology gained from this lab will make an important contribution to the country's livestock development and food security in the future.
The inaugural ceremony, chaired and conducted by Professor Dr. Munir Hossain, Head of the Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics, was attended by the University’s Student Affairs Advisor, the Proctor, Deans of various faculties, faculty members, researchers, project-related officials, students, and invited guests. Following the ceremony, the guests visited the laboratory in person and were informed about its modern infrastructure, equipment, and research facilities.
After the visit, the attendees expressed their strong belief that this world-class, state-of-the-art laboratory will elevate livestock and biotechnology-based education and research in Bangladesh to a new level.
