Land management for improving soil health and environmental quality: Can we achieve synergies?

Land management encompasses the management of soils, nutrients, crops, and water. When poorly implemented, such practices degrade soil productivity and increase soil and nutrient losses to water and air, thereby impairing environmental quality. Today, enhancing soil health and environmental quality are widely recognized as two fundamental objectives of sustainable land management. However, research efforts often address these goals separately, with soil- and water-/or gas-focused studies proceeding in parallel. Increasingly, stakeholders call for a better understanding of the synergies between soil health and environmental quality, as well as the management practices that can deliver co-benefits.

This session invites contributions that investigate land management strategies aimed at improving soil health and water or air quality, with particular emphasis on approaches that consider both dimensions. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Conservation tillage,
  • Manure management,
  • Precision fertilizer application,
  • Crop diversification and cover cropping, and
  • Irrigation and drainage management.

Expected outcomes include knowledge sharing on the impacts of management practices on soil health and water/air quality, along with critical discussions on the opportunities and challenges of achieving synergies between the two. Through presentations and dialogue, we aim to clarify when and why management practices succeed, or fail, in meeting both objectives.
