BAU Syndicate, on its 306th meeting, has confirmed establishment of Marine Fisheries Research and Teaching Centre (MFRT) under the Faculty of Fisheries of BAU. Earlier, the proposal was initiated by the Faculty of Fisheries which has first been approved by the BAU Academic Council. Upon approval during 305th syndicate and confirmation during 306th syndicate of BAU the centre is now legally ‘created’. After winning of long negotiated huge area of Exclusive Economic Zone (in the Bay of Bengal) from India and Myanmar in the very recent past, Bangladesh government has declared its priority towards ‘Blue Economy’. As a result, the present government is encouraged to invest on sustainable exploitation, management and conservation of marine environment and resources. MFRT, to be developed in the south-eastern coastal part of the country, is expected to be built as a centre for excellence leading academic activities and research in the field of marine environment, ecology and fishery management.
